Jessie Olson: Powerlifter and Air Force Pilot Seeking Recovery

Jessie Olson1

Air Force Major and tanker pilot Jessie Olson is a force to be reckoned with. Whether deployed, traveling or those rare moments at home, stationed at Travis Air Force base in Vacaville, California, Jessie manages to train and compete as a powerlifter. We were honored to catch up with her in the middle of her hectic travel schedule – here’s her story in her own words.

I’ve always been involved in a sport – when I was a kid in suburban Chicago, Mom put us in swimming – and I started out figure skating on rollerskates! I got into the ROTC in high school, and continued in Air Force ROTC at Northern Illinois University – along with playing college rugby. I graduated ROTC-commissioned, and went into the Air Force. I’ve been very, very lucky in my opportunities, and have had a great career as a tanker pilot ever since.

My senior year in high school, I started getting into the gym, and in college I would go train with my roommate. As an all-around strong person, I did bodybuilding my senior year in college, and competed in a number of bodybuilding competitions. But my real love turned out to be powerlifting – because you can eat whatever you want!
For the last five years, I’ve been competing in powerlifting – and have 7 or 8 competitions under my belt. While I was stationed in Botswana for 2 years, I trained in powerlifting, but competed in Strongman. My training regimen – when I’m not on a trip or deployed – is lifting heavy 6 days a week. My favorite events are benching and deadlifting. I throw in a little cardio – but mostly I lift heavy.

The trouble is, I don’t like to rest – so recovery is a problem. And because I’m only 5’6” tall, I have really abused and hurt my lower back, shoulders, elbows, knees and hips. My last few competitions were really painful. But I started following Strongman Dennis Long on Instagram, and he mentioned how much Play Again Now helped him with recovery. I’ve been using it for about six weeks – and going into this last meet I didn’t feel like I was going to die! My elbows aren’t killing me; my hips and my back feel really good.

Tanker pilots like me can spend 4 to 18 hours sitting in that seat – most pilots just want to go home and sleep afterward. But I am crazy dedicated to fitness – if I don’t work out I feel more lethargic and tired. Play Again Now keeps helping me when I sit in front of my computer at the office – I’m just not stiff anymore. It’s the only supplement that has made a lasting difference – I pushed it on to my Dad, who just had total knee replacement, and now he’s trying it during his physical therapy process.

I love having a plan, a goal – in my next meet I want to hit 1,000 pounds total in the three lifts. My goals give me more focus in the gym. Play Again Now works for me, in the whole spectrum of sitting all day and then hitting the gym six days a week. Look for people who use the product, do the research – and then try it yourself. It’s well worth it to try Play Again Now.
