Lisa Marquette: CrossFit Games Competitor and So Much More!

Lisa Marquette
Lisa Marquette is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Health & Sport Sciences at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland. She is also Co-Owner and Coach at Iron Strong CrossFit, and just qualified for the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games in August 2017. How does she do it? Here’s her story in her own words.

I’ve been an athlete since my parents put my twin sister, Alyssa Mealey Stookey, and me in a YMCA gymnastics class when we were just three. I began competing by the age of seven – continued through high school and received a full Division I athletic scholarship to the University of Maryland. After my collegiate career, I continued with club gymnastics for an additional year before retiring from the sport.

After my gymnastics career, I picked up running to stay active and have run four marathons and over a dozen half marathons. Then in 2011, an old teammate of mine posted about CrossFit online – I was curious and she suggested I find a gym in my local area, so I did. I have been hooked ever since.

My husband Dave and I wanted to create a space to allow multiple disciplines — CrossFit, weight lifting, powerlifting and Strongman – to be housed in one location. So, at the end of October 2016, myself, Dave and my brother, Kevin Mealey, opened Iron Strong CrossFit (http://ironstrongcrossfit.com/). Our business is doing great – we love having a direct and positive impact on people’s lives – whether it be to help a member lose weight or train to compete as we do. Our goal is to continue to build upon our welcoming, supportive and positive environment and to do all we can to support our members as they strive to achieve their health, fitness and athletic goals.

I started competing in CrossFit in 2012. I first competed in local competitions and then successfully qualifying for the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Regionals in 2013 and 2014, followed by the Atlantic CrossFit Regionals in 2017. Reaching the CrossFit Games in 2017 is the culmination of years of consistent high-intensity training and a commitment to a lifestyle that supports this level of training. I train six days a week, and my program includes Olympic weightlifting, strength training, elements of gymnastics, cardio and accessory work. When you train this hard day in and day out, recovery is super important – I always ensure that I am mobilizing daily and that my nutrition and sleep are dialed in to support my goals.

Finding Play Again Now has been amazing for my recovery process. I take Play Again Now every night before bed – and because the product is very helpful with controlling inflammation, I am close to pain-free the day after a tough workout. With focusing as much as I have on my training for this year’s CrossFit season, Play Again Now has really helped me with the daily aches and pains that naturally come with high-intensity exercise.

For me, finding balance in life has been challenging and something I continuously strive to achieve. I’m still learning to successfully juggle being a wife to my amazing and loving husband, serving as a full-time tenured Associate Professor, training as a competitive CrossFit athlete, and being a business owner. At times life seems crazy and hectic, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Life is too short and we have to enjoy the ride!

I am excited to be competing in the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games this summer and truly honored to be able to do so by representing Iron Strong CrossFit and all of the people who have supported me through this journey.
